AI grading on Examino happens in two stages: first reading the paper, then evaluating it.
1. Transcribing the paper
The AI reads each page of the scanned paper and transcribes what the student wrote, question by question. This step handles handwriting, with a confidence level that can vary depending on the legibility of the scan and the handwriting.
2. Grading according to the chosen mode
Once the paper is transcribed, the AI evaluates the student's answers based on the grading mode set when the exam was created:
With a grading scale: the AI assigns a numeric grade to each question based on the defined criteria, then calculates the total grade.
With competency-based assessment: the AI places each assessed competency at one of the 4 proficiency levels, with no numeric grade.
What you get
At the end of grading, each paper displays the grades or levels per question, along with AI-generated comments. Each paper and each question also carries a reliability score that tells you how confident the AI is in its reading and grading.
You always have the final say: any AI-generated grade or comment can be freely edited at any time, with a history kept of your changes.
