AP Lang Rubric:
Free Scoring Tool for English Teachers
One scoring tool for the three AP English Language essays. Pick synthesis, rhetorical analysis or argument, mark the thesis, the evidence and commentary level and the sophistication point, and see what each student needs to work on.
Score an AP Lang essay, row by row
Defensible position on the prompt, not a summary or a list of pros and cons.
One holistic level, from summary (1) to consistently explained reasoning (4).
Nuance built into the argument, not a flourish or a passing counterargument.
Points this essay missed
- Thesis: no defensible position, or the essay only restates the prompt or lists pros and cons.
- Evidence and commentary: fewer than two sources referenced.
- Sophistication: no sustained nuance, such as tensions between sources, the limits of the argument, or a consistently vivid style.
The AP Lang rubric: three rows, six points
AP English Language and Composition uses an analytic rubric with the same three rows for the synthesis, rhetorical analysis and argument essays. Most of the score sits in the middle row: four of the six points reward evidence and the commentary that explains it. The descriptions below follow the 2026 scoring guidelines.
Thesis (1 point)
A defensible position that answers the prompt. In the rhetorical analysis essay, the thesis has to say something about the writer's rhetorical choices, not just the topic of the passage.
Does not earn the point:
Weighs pros and cons without taking a side
States an obvious fact that needs no defense
Summarizes the passage or the sources
Evidence and commentary (4 points)
Scored as one holistic level, from summary to a fully explained line of reasoning:
1: Mostly general evidence, summarized rather than explained
2: Some specific evidence, but no clear line of reasoning
3: Specific evidence for every claim, explained only in places
4: Specific evidence for every claim, consistently explained
Grammar and mechanics errors that get in the way of meaning keep an essay out of the fourth point.
Sophistication (1 point)
Sophistication of thought or a complex understanding of the rhetorical situation, built into the argument rather than added as a flourish.
Does not earn the point:
Openings like “In a world where…” or “Since the beginning of time…”
A nod to the other side (“Some may argue…”) that goes nowhere
Long, complex sentences that add nothing to the argument

What changes between the three AP Lang essays
Synthesis essay rubric
Students get six sources, including a visual or a data source. The evidence row counts sources: referencing fewer than two keeps the essay at 0, two sources reach 1 point, and every level from 2 points up needs at least three. Sophistication can come from exploring tensions between the sources.
Rhetorical analysis rubric
The thesis must analyze the writer's choices. To reach 3 points, the essay explains how at least one rhetorical choice serves the writer's purpose; 4 points need several choices explained. Analyzing choices one by one, without showing how they work together, does not earn sophistication.
Argument essay rubric
No sources are provided: evidence comes from reading, history, current events or experience. The thesis takes a clear position on the claim in the prompt. Sophistication often comes from discussing the limits or implications of the student's own position.
Exam facts teachers ask about
The free-response section has the three essays, synthesis, rhetorical analysis and argument, in 2 hours and 15 minutes, including a 15-minute reading period. Together they count for 55% of the exam score, and each essay is scored out of 6.
Turning scores into your next lesson
After scoring a set, the class view shows the share of possible points earned on each row. A class that sits at 2 in evidence and commentary needs work on building a line of reasoning, not on finding more quotes. A class that earns the thesis but rarely the sophistication point is ready for lessons on tension and implication.
